LOUDONVILLE, NY – Canisius scored 10 runs over the final four innings – all of which were multi-run frames – as the Golden Griffins rallied past Siena Baseball 12-7 in the series-opener at Connors Park.
Siena (9-28, 6-7) scored five times over the first two innings against Canisius (19-18, 9-4) ace Matt Duffy, and built a 6-2 lead through five innings. But the Golden Griffins got two back to halve the deficit in the sixth, before claiming a 7-6 lead in the seventh on a three-run homer by Mike Steffan.
The Saints responded to knot the score at 7-all on
Alex Milone's team-leading fourth home run of the season in the home half of the seventh, but Canisius continued its onslaught with three more runs to reclaim the lead for good at 10-7 in the eighth.
Steffan drove in four runs to pace the Golden Griffins, while Max Grant, who entered the day hitting .416 for Canisius, added four more hits for the Griffs who pounded out 16 in total.
Milone and
Brett Young registered two hits apiece for Siena, while Young also scored three times and knocked in a pair.
Arlo Marynczak tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts over seven innings in his first start of the season for the Saints.
Game Two of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
