Water Polo Falls in Pennsylvania Doubleheader

Saints Dropped Conference Matches to La Salle and Villanova

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Siena Water Polo (4-19, 1-9) rounded out a crowded weekend of conference action with a pair of road losses Sunday. The Saints dropped a 13-4 decision at MAAC foe Villanova before falling, 18-10, at La Salle to end the day in the Philadelphia area.

Villanova 13, Siena 4

The Wildcats used the second half of the teams' second meeting this season to pull away after what was a tightly-contested opening half of play. Senior Georgia Vargas got the Saints on the board mid-way through the first quarter to counter three Villanova goals in the opening period, while neither team scored in the second quarter.

The home team proceeded to net the first six goals of the second half to pull away, with Vargas ending the day with two goals, while juniors Grace Boeve and Lily Graham each added a score. Junior goalkeeper Anna Mossakowski recorded eight saves in-goal.

La Salle 18, Siena 10

After Vargas got on the board to begin the nightcap for the Saints, the Explorers netted the next four goals and controlled the game thereafter, holding an 8-5 halftime lead and netting six of eight goals in the third quarter. Freshman Ashley Chand and senior Bianca Prinsloo scored back-to-back goals within 43 seconds of each other near the end of the first half, but the home team mustered up the next four and seven of the next eight goals to pull away for good.

Graham recorded a hat trick and Prinsloo scored a pair of goals, while Vargas, junior Sydney Jones, freshman Emma Nosenchuck, Boeve, and Chand also scored. Mossakowski spent three quarters of action in-goal, making six saves.

With two weeks remaining in the 2022 regular season, Siena will head to Lexington, Virginia next weekend for three conference matches against St. Francis Brooklyn, VMI, and LIU.
