Softball Celebrates Senior Day with Sweep of Monmouth

Saints Clinched MAAC Championship Berth to Round Out Home Play

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Two graduating members of the Siena Softball (26-21, 12-6) team were honored prior to Sunday's doubleheader at Siena Softball Field to close out home play, but the Saints ended up with much more to celebrate. Siena ran its win streak to eight with its third consecutive doubleheader sweep, taking down MAAC foe Monmouth with 1-0 and 7-1 victories.

Aside from compiling its longest win streak since winning a program record 11 consecutive games during the 2012 season and piecing together its first sweep of perennial power Monmouth since 2017, Siena officially clinched a berth in the 2022 MAAC Championship following Sunday's action, marking the fifth straight eligible season that the team has solidified a spot in the postseason. Entering the final weekend of regular season play, Siena remains in sole possession of third place in the conference standings, including two games back from conference leader Canisius (14-4), and a game off of Fairfield (11-5).

Siena 1, Monmouth 0

Following a brilliant team pitching performance en-route to a doubleheader sweep of Rider on Saturday, the Saints picked up where they left off defensively, with freshman pitcher Adriana Romano concluding a lockdown homestand with her third consecutive complete game win in the circle. Three days after compiling a career-high 11 strikeouts, the Barnegat, New Jersey Native went for ten strikeouts while allowing just three hits as the Saints recorded their third shutout win of the year.

Siena held a 5-3 hits advantage, with the game's lone run coming off a sacrifice fly from freshman Kyleigh Potter in the second inning to score junior Emma McLaughlin. Junior Angelina Stile went 2-3 from the plate to lead the team offensively, while the Hawks stranded nine runners on the base paths.

Siena 7, Monmouth 1

The Saints' offense came to life in game two, pumping out 14 hits and using five Monmouth errors to their advantage. Siena got on the board in the bottom of the first off a wild pitch that allowed sophomore Mikala Fletcher to score, while an RBI groundout plated junior Jocelyn Ulrich and a McLaughlin RBI single drove in Stile in the third.

Monmouth broke onto the scoreboard with an RBI single in the fourth, but the home team quickly responded with fireworks in the bottom of the inning. After cashing in on a similar sequence on Saturday, Siena loaded up the bases for Stile to crank a bases-clearing double into deep left center field. The Rock City Falls, New York native would come around to score gain on a fielding error later in the inning.

Stile again led the team offensively by going a perfect three-for-three with three RBI's, while McLaughlin, sophomore Isabella Pardo, and freshman Nicolette Kasch also recorded multi-hit games. Junior Nicole Patille (9-7) recorded a win in the circle for the third straight appearance, striking out two in four innings of work, while senior Ava Fitzmaurice downed three in two innings of relief, and junior Allison Speshyock recorded a strikeout during the final inning.

Siena ends its 13-game home campaign with a record of 10-3, achieving double-digit home wins for the third straight year. With four more regular season games on the schedule, the Saints will wrap non-conference action on Wednesday, May 4 with a doubleheader at Holy Cross at 3 & 5 PM.
