NEW BRITAIN, CT – Facing a tough test on the road to begin its 2022 season, Siena Women's Soccer (0-1) was challenged by defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions Central Connecticut State (1-0) Thursday evening. The Saints dropped a 2-0 decision to the Blue Devils at the CCSU Soccer Field in New Britain, Connecticut, marking the first of two non-conference matches this week.
Despite out-shooting CCSU, 7-6, during the first half of play, the Saints could not connect with the back of the net themselves, and could not rebound from an early conversion by the home team. The home team sprung onto the scoreboard in the 12th minute of play, with reigning NEC Midfielder of the Year Roma McLaughlin connecting on a penalty kick opportunity. The Blue Devils used the first minute of play in the second half to extend their lead, with a second chance attempt buried inside the box in the 46th minute.
Seven different Saints registered a shot in the season opener, with senior Caitlin Wania, junior Grace Dimkopoulos, and sophomore Cora Keohane leading the way with two shots apiece. Junior goalkeeper Angela Fini played the entirety of the match in-goal, registering seven saves in her collegiate debut in the Green and Gold. CCSU held a 17-10 shots advantage on the evening, while drawing seven of 11 total corner kick attempts.
Siena will look to shake off the loss in its home opener this weekend against a perennial rival. The Saints will host Holy Cross in the first of nine matches at Hickey Field this season on Sunday, August 21 at 1 PM, with action airing live on Siena All-Access.
