LOUDONVILLE, NY – Despite Siena Men's Soccer's recent success against the number 22 ranked team in the nation, its most recent try did not result in victory. The Saints (4-2-1) broke a three-match unbeaten streak Wednesday afternoon at Hickey Field with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of #22 Vermont (6-1-1), who picked up its fifth straight victory in its first match as a nationally-ranked team since 2018.
Entering its final non-conference week of the 2022 season, the Saints faced an uphill battle throughout the duration of the contest, with the Catamounts attempting 17 of 18 total shots, all eight attempts on-goal, and breaking on to the scoreboard in the 26th minute following a Siena turnover in its defensive third. Two more goals would go for UVM in the 56th and 83rd minutes of play, with Siena's lone shot attempt coming from junior Antonio La Gamba late in the second half.
The visitors also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, while graduate student goalkeeper Greg Monroe registered each of the game's five saves. The defending MAAC Defensive Player of the Week appeared in his 69th career match and is now just under 40 minutes away from setting the program record for the most career minutes in-goal.
The loss ended a five-match unbeaten streak for the Saints against ranked foes, which dated back to 2011. Siena will conclude non-conference action at Brown on Saturday, September 24, with kickoff set for 7 PM in Providence, Rhode Island.
