Siena Bags First Win, Takes Down UAlbany

Bagnall Scores Twice to Propel Saints Over Crosstown Rivals

ALBANY, NY – Annie Bagnall scored twice to deliver Siena Women's Soccer its first victory of the season with a 2-1 triumph over crosstown rival UAlbany at Casey Stadium.

Bagnall erupted for a pair of goals in just 8:36 to put Siena (1-6-2, 0-1) in control midway through the first half. In the 22nd minute she one-timed home a cross from Cora Keohane, and in the 30th made a quick move around a defender and blasted home a strike from the top of the 18 off assists from Micaiah Croce and Danielle Borrino. The outburst marked the second multi-goal performance this season for Bagnall, as the junior striker has now accounted for four of the Saints' seven goals to date.

Siena carried its 2-0 advantage into the break following an entertaining first half in which the teams combined for 26 shots, albeit just six of which were on target. The Saints came alive with 14 first half shots – nearly five more than their overall season per-match average of 9.3 entering play.

UAlbany (3-6-1, 1-0) erupted for a decisive 16-3 second half shot advantage, and finally got onto the scoreboard in the 73rd minute. A handball in the box by Siena resulted in a penalty kick conversion for Marisa Tava.

But that would be the only blemish the Saints would allow, as they put the icing on the cake of Siena College's milestone 85th birthday with a win over their crosstown rivals.

The teams ultimately finished combining for 45 shots, with the Great Danes holding a 28-17 advantage. Each side attempted eight corner kicks apiece. Both the overall shot and corner kick totals marked season-high for the Saints, who registered their first win over UAlbany in six years, and secured their first triumph in state capital since 2009.

Angela Fini made three saves in goal to earn her first collegiate win for Siena which concludes the non-conference portion of their schedule on a high note.

The Saints resume conference play when they head to Connecticut to take on MAAC preseason favorite Quinnipiac next Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 2:30 p.m.
