Siena Volleyball had an emphatic response on Sunday afternoon as the team regrouped for a 3-0 sweep at host Saint Peter's 25-23, 25-15, 25-18 on site of the Run Baby Arena in Jersey City, NJ.
A day after an error-filled match at Rider, the Saints nearly cut their mistakes in half and hit for a .289 hitting percentage collectively as a team to improve to 2-14 overall and 2-4 inside MAAC play.
Siena's biggest test came in the opening set. When the Saints trailed 18-17 after three consecutive points scored by the Peacocks, Siena took five of the next six points behind two kills from
Sara Wagner, one each from
Olga Sawinska and
Meghan Johnsson as well as an ace off the serve of
Emily Wood.
While the Peacocks (0-17, 0-6 MAAC) tied it back up at 23 apiece, a service and attack error gave the Saints the set.
From there, Siena settled in by racing out to 10-4 advantage in the second set. The freshmen got into the act with
Kayla Jones and
Ella Treasure each contributing to a 4-0 spurt.
After some trading of points, Siena went on another 5-1 run on kills by Wagner and Treasure as well as aces off the hand of
Oliwia Majtyka and Wood to capture a 20-12 lead.
Another freshman,
Sonja Meyer, picked up a kill and two more kills from
Monet Latunde and a finishing kill by Wagner gave Siena the set at 25-15.
In the third set, the Saints hit. 345 and put together consistent runs of three and four consecutive points to go ahead by 10.
Sawinska had a stretch, in which she secured three straight kills. Saint Peter's got five straight back to make it 23-18, but Siena closed on another Sawinska kill and an attacking error by the Peacocks.
Wagner had a team-high 13 kills, Sawinska put down 10 kills while Jones sprinkled in five kills.
Junior
Claire Isaksen had a team-high 14 assists with five digs and freshman
Payton Hinkle totaled a team-best 14 digs, seven assists and two aces.
Siena returns next weekend for a homestand and will host Iona on Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
