Annie Bagnall scored and
Brooke Boermeester made six saves as Siena Women's Soccer ran its unbeaten streak to four with a hard fought 1-1 draw at Canisius.
The teams were deadlocked through the first 45 in which each side attempted seven shots apiece. Canisius (6-2-5, 3-1-2) had what appeared to be a sure goal cleared off the line by
Sarah Harnett, while Siena (4-6-3, 2-1-3) put five of its attempts on target.
The Saints broke the stalemate in the 53
rd minute.
Iona Snape sent a centering feed from the right to Bagnall who one-timed a laser from the top of the 18 into the top left corner. The score marked just the 10
th goal bequeathed all season by the top scoring defense in the MAAC.
But Siena couldn't make the goal stand up, as the Golden Griffins netted the equalizer in the 67
th minute. Sophia Konstantinou sent a long service into the box which found Jessica Whittaker behind the defense for the tying tally.
Canisius held a 19-14 margin in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corners for the afternoon.
With the draw, the Saints pushed their unbeaten streak to seven straight (5-0-2) over the Golden Griffins and 13 of the last 14 (10-1-3).
Jordan Spencer stopped six shots for upstart Canisius which is now unbeaten in 11 of 13 matches so far this fall while already achieving their highest win total in four years. The Golden Griffins entered the day second in the MAAC Standings.
Siena continues its tough stretch by now turning around to take on the team at the top of the MAAC table Saturday in defending champion Quinnipiac which is off to a perfect 6-0 league start following a six-goal output this afternoon. The Saints will aim to slow down the Bobcats while also building upon their own unbeaten streak when they host their penultimate home match at 1 p.m. at Hickey Field. The contest will serve as Siena's annual Senior Day, and the program will honor its eight true seniors in a special pre-match ceremony at 12:40 p.m.
