Saints Make it Four Straight with Home Comeback Win Over Fairfield

Hersi’s Second Half Set Piece Continues Siena’s Streak

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena's winning ways continue to propel it up the MAAC standings as the home stretch of conference play begins. The Saints (5-7, 5-1) ran their win streak to four with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Fairfield (3-9-1, 0-6-1) at Hickey Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Green and Gold have now won four straight matches for the first time since the 2014 campaign, and have matched their longest win streak overall since 2010. The accomplishment comes despite an 0-6 start to the year, and gives Siena five wins in its last six matches.

Siena came from behind to win for the second straight Wednesday at home, with Fairfield's Thomas Drillien capitalizing on an errant Siena turnover in the fifth minute to cross a ball past the Siena end line and put the Stags up early.

After calming down in the brunt of the first half and the return of sophomore midfielder Magnus Saaby off the bench for the first time in four matches, senior Bial Hersi moved a bouncer to the front of the Fairfield box that was tipped by a Stag defender to signal an own goal to tie the match in the 42nd minute just before the half.

Hersi would find himself in the middle of a potent Siena attack to begin the second half, and gave the Saints the lead for good in the 58th minute via a high right foot from the far corner of the box. The ball deflected to Hersi from junior Zach Gardner and was started on a near side corner kick from Saaby.

Siena ultimately prevailed despite both teams attempting ten shots apiece and the visitors holding a 5-2 advantage in shots on-target. Fairfield also held a 7-6 edge in corner kick attempts. Hersi led seven different shot takers with four attempts, while freshman goalkeeper Bennet Glinder logged four saves on the day.

Continuing to move towards officially locking up a spot in the 2023 postseason, Siena will remain home on Saturday, October 21 to host Mount St. Mary's at 3 PM on Senior Day.
