LOUDONVILLE, NY – The normal magic that is associated with Senior Day went a little farther for Siena Men's Soccer as it honored eight graduating members prior to Saturday's match. The Saints (6-7, 6-1) captured its fifth straight victory and clinched a 2023 postseason berth with a 2-0 win over Mount St. Mary's (2-7-3, 2-3-2) at Hickey Field to continue what has emerged as a remarkable in-season comeback.
After beginning the 2023 season 0-6 with a rigorous non-league schedule, the Green and Gold have tied a program record with five straight wins, a feat that has only been accomplished one previous time in 2010. Siena has won six of its last seven games overall and has outscored opponents, 10-2, during its five-match win streak.
Enjoying a stretch of three of its final five regular season matches at home, the Saints kicked off a dominant Senior Day affair with a senior score via
Bilal Hersi who passed to and received back a ball from junior
Zach Gardner that he slammed away from 20 yards out in the 25
th minute to record his second straight game with a goal.
As the Saints continued to roll, another senior capitalized on an insurance goal opportunity in the 74
th minute.
Junior Kone received a cross-field transition outlet pass from Gardner and beat his coverage and the Mount goalkeeper to record his third goal of the year.
Siena held a convincing 13-6 shots advantage – including 6-3 in shots on-goal – while owning all five corner kick attempts. Sophomore
Magnus Saaby led six different Siena shot-takers with four, while Hersi added three.
Having punched its ticket to the 2023 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship with three regular season matches remaining, Siena will look to potentially lock up a first-round bye and remain in contention for the 2023 MAAC Regular Season Title. The Saints will next face the top two other teams in the conference, beginning at Iona on Wednesday, October 25 at 1 PM in New Rochelle, NY.
