Men’s Soccer Edges Niagara for First Road Triumph

Saints Used Penalty Kick to Avenge 2022 MAAC Quarterfinal Result

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Saturday's contest for Siena Men's Soccer ended up being a "what goes around, comes around" scenario. After falling at MAAC foe Niagara in a penalty shootout in the 2022 MAAC Quarterfinals, the Saints (2-7, 2-1) used a first half penalty kick opportunity to take 1-0 victory over the Purple Eagles (1-7-2, 1-2-1) for its first road victory of the 2023 season.

En-route to snapping a three-match road losing streak at Niagara dating back to 2018, the Saints played even keel ball until drawing a penalty kick opportunity in the 41st minute, which was converted by freshman Ben Biton for his first collegiate goal.

From there, the Green and Gold defended against six second half shots and won despite being out-shot, 12-10, in the game. Both teams attempted four shots on-goal, while Niagara drew five of eight corner kick opportunities. Biton led five different Siena shot-takers with four attempts, while senior Bilal Hersi followed with three shots. Freshman goalkeeper Bennet Glinder recorded his first collegiate shutout with four saves in the process.

Three of Siena's next four matches will take place at home, beginning on Wednesday, October 11, when the Saints welcome MAAC rival Canisius to Hickey Field at 3 PM to try and continue a nine-match unbeaten streak against the Golden Griffins.
