Separated by less than eight miles, the Capital Region rivals meet for the second straight season following a five-year hiatus in the series. Siena (1-4), which turned a 16-point second half deficit into as much as a 15-point lead late in last year's 75-62 triumph, is seeking to win the Albany Cup in back-to-back years for the first time since 2008-09. UAlbany (2-3) has captured five of the past seven matchups, after the Saints had won nine of the first 11 official Albany Cups to tip-off the 21
st century.
Â
Siena returns to the friendly confines of MVP Arena for the first time in 20 days after having played each of their past four games away from home. The shorthanded Saints – who have been without starting guards
Michael Eley (ankle) and
Zek Tekin (concussion protocol) for the last four and two games, respectively – dropped all four contests, but have continued to show improvement. Siena battled Horizon League preseason No. 2 Milwaukee, which won 22 games a year ago, to a 61-59 final to close out the Sunshine Slam Tuesday in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Â
UAlbany meanwhile picked up its second win of the season on Tuesday, edging Army West Point 62-59 in Glens Falls. The Great Danes were projected to finish seventh out of nine teams according to the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll after posting an 8-23 (3-13) record a year ago.
