Siena Volleyball fought competitively in the opening set on the road against Fairfield, the current top seed in the Metro Atlantic Conference (MAAC), before succumbing to a 3-0 loss (22-25, 9-25, 9-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
The Saints (2-24, 2-14 MAAC) led as late as 9-7 in the first set on kills from
Sara Wagner,
Kayla Jones,
Ella Treasure and
Hannah Bowman and benefited from an ace off the hand of
Claire Isaksen. The Stags responded with a 7-0 run mainly with Kyla Berg serving to go ahead 14-9. Siena answered back with a pair of kills from
Sonja Meyer and
Sina Toroslu to keep it tight. Two aces from
Emily Wood got the Saints to within 22-21, but a couple of Saints errors and a kill by Mikayla Haut finished off the set.
In the second set, Siena led 3-1, but Fairfield had two major spurts to take control of the set with a 6-0 run followed by a 9-0 run later in the set.
The Stags (17-6, 13-2 MAAC) reeled off 10 consecutive points behind three kills from Allie Elliott to begin the third stanza. Siena wasn't able to get going as it committed more errors (eight) than kills (six) in the set.
Fairfield hit .376 for the match while Siena hit just .044.
Meyer and Jones led the Saints with six kills apiece while
Oliwia Majtyka had a team-best 10 assists.
Emily Wood had 14 digs and three aces.
Siena plays at Quinnipiac (16-8, 12-3 MAAC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
