Montgomery, Leffew Shoot Mount Past Saints

Duo Combines for 50 Points on 20-23 Shooting

EMMITSBURG, MD – Reserve De'Shayne Montgomery and Preseason First Team All-MAAC selection Dakota Leffew combined for 50 points on 20-23 shooting including a perfect 8-8 from three as Mount St. Mary's defeated Siena Basketball 80-48 at Knott Arena.

Montgomery came off the bench to score a game-high 27 points while adding six rebounds, four steals, and four blocks for Mount St. Mary's (2-5, 1-1), which snapped a four-game losing streak. Leffew added 23 points and eight assists for the Mountaineers who secured their first-ever win in seven all-time meetings between the new MAAC foes.

Giovanni Emejuru, Michael Evbagharu, and Zek Tekin combined to score 30 of the 34 second half points for Siena (2-6, 1-1). Emejuru and Tekin finished with 13 points apiece, while Evbagharu tallied 11 points and eight rebounds for the Saints who fell in their milestone 600th MAAC Regular Season game.

Mount led for more than 36 minutes and by as many as 36 points. They scored 12 unanswered points early in the first half to take the lead for good, and added a separate 10-0 run later in the stanza. Mount led Siena 30-14 at the break, while holding the Saints to just 23% (6-26) shooting with only one assist and 11 turnovers in the half.

Mount started the second half on an 11-3 run to push their lead past 20 and pulled away from there. The Mount shot 62% from the field in the second half and 55% overall. Mountaineers not named Montgomery and Leffew combined to shoot just 9-30 (30%).

Siena posted season-highs of 20 turnovers forced and 10 steals, but turned the ball over 19 times themselves, while Mount held a 33-15 advantage in points off turnovers.

The shorthanded Saints were without reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year and leading scorer Michael Eley for the fifth time in eight games (ankle), while key rotational piece Michael Ojo (ankle) also did not dress.

Siena returns to non-conference action – and the Capital Region – when they host Bryant Wednesday at 7 p.m. at MVP Arena.
