Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

History and a Big Comeback Win Kicks off Season Opener

Soures sets program record for goals; Saints rally past Colgate

HAMILTON, NY – History was set early in the game. A thunderous second-half rally was to follow.

Siena Women's Lacrosse got the 2023 season off to an uplifting start when All-MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Mary Soures took care of a milestone in the first quarter with a pair of goals that gave her 148 goals for her career to surpass Nicole McNeeley to become the program's all-time leading scorer.

After trailing 6-3 at halftime, Siena roared back with eight unanswered goals en route to an 11-7 nonconference road victory at Colgate's Andy Kerr Stadium on Thursday.

It marked the third consecutive win on opening day for the Saints, who defeated New Hampshire 18-6 in 2022 and Canisius 6-5 in double overtime in 2021.  It also gives Siena a 4-3 edge in all-time meetings with the Raiders including three straight wins in the series.

Senior attack Katy Wangsness also had a career day, notching her first career hat trick in the Green and Gold. Sophomore attack Grace Dobrzynski was also heavily involved in the offense as the West Greenwich, R.I. native tallied five points with a goal and four assists.

Four others scored for Saints including Rebecca Gilhooley, Meghan Decker, Amanda Nieman and Kylie Kuhn

Protecting the net, Sabrina Krasner was tested throughout and appeared to get stingier as the match wore on. The senior from Roseland, NJ only allowed one goal after halftime and secured a career-best 13 saves. Overall, the defense did a sound job of getting the ball back to the offense side as well, clearing 22 of 24 successfully.

Siena will return to action for their home opener at Hickey Field this Sunday, February 19 for a noon draw time against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Pittsburgh.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
