For three quarters, Siena Men's Lacrosse matched Providence's bravado goal for goal with grit, hustle and stick skills.
In the fourth quarter, it got away from them as the Saints allowed seven unanswered and ultimately lost 18-11 at Providence in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Earlier, a pair of sophomores ignited the Saints' offense.
Pratt Reynolds, last season's MAAC Rookie of the Year, broke out with a hat trick after being held without a goal in last week's victory against NJIT.
Ryan McCarthy picked up right where he left off by recording his second consecutive three goals-and-one assist performance for Siena.
Zac Schuette, the transfer from Springfield College, made an impression as well by scoring a pair of goals in the third quarter including one with 12 seconds remaining that brought Siena to a 11-11 tie.
The Friars' Jack Horrigan scored what would be the deciding goal at the 10:33 mark left in the fourth quarter. Horrigan, Michael Chabra and Ty Thureson each had three goals to lead Providence (2-1).
The Saints had clear advantages throughout the game. Of note,
Dylan Pape won 23 of 30 faceoffs to gain a heavy edge in gaining possession. Siena outshot Providence 49-37 for the game.
Fifth-year graduate student
Christian Watts,
Rocco Barbero and
Jack Cavaioli each tallied a goal while goalkeeper Chris Yanchoris recorded 12 saves.
Siena returns to action to host UMass Lowell (0-2) on Saturday, February 25 with a 11 a.m. faceoff on Hickey Field.
