Softball Drops Pair to Continue Spring Games Weekend

Saints Fell to UT Martin and FIU in Florida

MADEIRA BEACH, FL – Siena Softball continued to battle national competition at The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida on Sunday. The Saints (7-3) took a 7-4 against UT Martin before dropping a 4-1 decision to FIU in their third straight day of competition.

UT Martin 7, Siena 4

The Saints battled back from an early deficit to start the day, but could not overcome a late Skyhawks surge. UT Martin got on the board with an RBI single in the first and extended its lead to three in the third by way of an RBI single and a throwing error.

Siena responded with a bases-loaded walk that sent in graduate student Sabrina Vargas and a sacrifice fly from senior Shannon Bonewit that plated graduate student Ava Fitzmaurice in the third to come within a run. The Saints stranded three runners over the next two innings and could not overcome 16 UT Martin hits to get back in the game.

A pair of UT Martin RBI singles in the sixth were followed by an RBI double off the bat of sophomore McKenzie Swinson that sent junior Isabella Pardo in to score. Two more RBI singles gave the Skyhawks a 7-3 lead before senior Angelina Stile knocked an RBI double to right center to plate classmate Jocelyn Ulrich. Siena had runners on second and third and sent the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but grounded into a double play to end the game and the comeback attempt.

Stile recorded a multi-hit outing, while redshirt-freshman Alissa Eimont (1-1) took the loss with three strikeouts and five runs (four earned) allowed in five and two-thirds innings of work in the circle.

FIU 4, Siena 1

Siena's offense could not get going in the final game of the day with just three hits to ten from the Panthers. FIU used a solo home run to take an early advantage in the first inning, and followed up with three RBI singles in the fifth to pull out to a 4-0 lead. The Saints' lone offense of the outing came in the form of an RBI single to center from Fitzmaurice that sent in Swinson to score.

Fitzmaurice had two of the team's three knocks, while senior Nicole Patille (1-2) took the loss by allowing four runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings of work.

Siena's final action of an extended Spring Games weekend will come on Monday, February 27 at 11 AM when it faces Oakland.
