BUFFALO, NY – Siena Swimming & Diving got off on the right stroke to begin the 2023 MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships, marking the fourth straight championship event that the team has set a new school record. Day one of the four-day postseason tournament kicked off Wednesday evening with the Saints participating in the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay at the Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College in Buffalo, New York.
The team of sophomore Maddie Buck, senior Reilly King, senior Lauren Ostrander, and senior Rory Kalac placed fourth in the 800 free relay with a record-breaking time of 7:40.35, over four seconds better than the seed time entering the night. The mark bested the old record of 7:42.11 set in 2020, with King and Ostrander re-setting the record that they were a part of as freshmen.
The Saints' 200 medley relay squad of senior Elisabeth Balicanta, junior Audrey Shultz, junior Demi Bobarakis, and Kalac finished eighth with a time of 1:47.17 for an improvement of 62 hundredths of a second off the seed time.
Through two events, Siena sits in fifth place with 52 points, with its sights set on besting a sixth-place finish from last season.
Day two of the 2023 MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships commences with preliminary races on Thursday, February 9 at 10 AM.
