Siena Men's Tennis played St. John's tight on several courts and dropped a pair of third set tie-breakers before falling 6-1 to the Johnnies in Queens, NY at the USTA Tennis Center on Friday.
In singles play, freshman
Edward Vo claimed the lone victory for the Saints (6-6) from the #5 slot by toppling Filipe Grebentsov 6-1, 6-2.
Tomas Del Olmo and
Jose Pablo Davila each pushed their opponents to a third set, but each took the hard-luck defeat. At the singles #2 position, del Olmo fought back before eventually falling 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 3-10 to Axel Vila Antuna. Davila took Adam Groves to three before dropping his match 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-10 at the #4 spot.
The Red Storm (10-4) took the doubles point after winning the first two matches.
Dante Russo and Vo dropped the #1 flight to Diogo Marquez and Antuna 6-1.
Agustin Suarez and
Matt Nardone fell in the second position to Carl Gustafsson and Groves 6-2.
Though it was incomplete, del Olmo and Davila did lead Sergio Molina and Giuseppe De Camelis 5-3 in the third doubles match.
Marquez beat Russo 6-3, 6-2 at the #1 position, Ryota Kaneda got past Nardone 6-1, 6-1 at #6 and Suarez was defeated 6-4, 6-3 from the #3 court.
Siena return to the courts to host Sacred Heart (3-6) on Friday at 6:45 p.m. at Tri-City Fitness.
The Pioneers have won seven of the prior 10 meetings with Siena, however the Saints have won the last two meetings by the score of 5-2 including last year's meeting.
