Tyler Shelnut led off the sixth inning with the go-ahead home run as sixth-ranked Florida survived upset-minded Siena Baseball 3-2 in the series-opener in Gainesville.
Freshman
Danny Barbero delivered a game-tying two-run double in the fifth for Siena (2-11), which fell just short in securing what would have been the second highest ranked upset in any sport since Siena Athletics joined the Division I ranks in 1976. The Siena Baseball team holds the distinction of the highest ranked upset in the College's history with a 9-8 win at fifth-ranked Tennessee on Mar. 15, 2006.
Florida (13-3) scored single runs in the first and second innings to claim a quick 2-0 lead. However, staff ace
Arlo Marynczak limited the damage and ultimately scattered seven singles over five effective innings while working in and out of trouble to keep the Saints within striking distance.
Marynczak combined with a pair of relievers to quell the nation's top offense, holding the Gators to their lowest run total in their past 26 games dating back to last season. Florida entered play ranking first nationally in hits, runs, home runs, and slugging percentage.
Barbero and the Saints broke through to knot the game at 2-2 with his two-run double to right center in the fifth, scoring
Aiden Stewart and
Matt Livingston. Barbero was on base a team-high three times with a pair of hits and a walk.
Both teams had their chances offensively, as the Gators stranded 11 runners while Siena left 10 while also striking out 16 times.
The Saints will take another crack at Florida Saturday in the middle game of the series at 4 p.m.
