A decisive third quarter in which Siena Men's Lacrosse was outscored 4-1 put the Saints in a precarious spot heading into the final frame as it was not able to recover in a 13-11 conference road loss at LIU on Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Siena (3-4, 1-2 MAAC) got off to an encouraging start as
Pratt Reynolds took over the first quarter with a season-high four goals to provide an early 5-3 lead at the end of one.
Ryan McCarthy scored on a feed from
George Rusnak and
Colin Gleason added his name to the scoring ledger as the Saints went up 7-4 with 3:11 before the halftime break.
But, the Sharks (3-5, 2-1 MAAC) responded by scoring nine of the next 11 goals to take a 13-9 lead with just 2:44 left in the game.
Sean Boll led the way with three goals while Austin McMahon and Brad Beck added two scores for LIU.
Siena received two late goals from
Jack Cavaioli and
Colin Gleason, but the clock ran against them. Each finished with two goals.
Christian Watts increased his consecutive point streak to 11 games dating back to last season, with his team-leading 19
th goal at the 12:58 mark of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 10-9.
Statistically, the game was nearly played at an even split with the Saints holding a 44-38 edge in shots and both teams taking 21 shots on target.
The teams were dead even in turnovers with 20 apiece and ground balls (33 each).
Saints' goalkeeper Chris Yanchoris (3-4) made eight saves and the fifth-year goalkeeper reached in a milestone in the process by going over the 400 career saves mark. Yanchoris also surpassed Tom Burbank (1986-87, 1989) for eighth all-time in program history with 404 saves.
In sight for Yanchoris to pass is Tom Morr (2008-2012), who finished his career with 417 saves.
Up next, Siena travels to Buffalo to play at Canisius (2-7, 1-2 MAAC) on Wednesday, March 29 at 4 p.m.
The teams have played some of the most competitive games of late, with the previous six head-to-head matchups being decided by two goals or fewer including five of six by just a single goal.
The Golden Griffins have won three straight in the series including last year's narrow 9-8 victory last March.
