Siena Women's Lacrosse enjoyed a second half to remember as the Saints rallied back from a two-goal halftime deficit, saw
Mary Soures reach an individual milestone and picked up a conference-opening 13-9 road victory at Iona on Saturday at Mazzella Field.
While it wasn't quite the barnburner of last year's meeting between the teams that totaled 41 goals, there were plenty of offensive moments as Siena outscored the Gaels 8-2 in the second half including 4-0 in the final 15 minutes of play.
Soures, the fifth-year midfielder, took center stage as she tallied two goals early in the opening quarter, added three more in the third and then netted the game-winner early in the fourth quarter to put Siena up for good at 10-9. In the process, Soures become the second player in program history to reach the 200-point career milestone, joining
Nicole McNeely (227 points in five seasons).
There are seven regular season games left plus any potential playoff games to surpass the all-time record.
Siena (6-4, 1-0 MAAC) ended the first half and started the second half quickly as
Katy Wangsness picked up a key score in the closing minute before halftime to cut the lead to 7-5. Soures scored on a man-down situation and it was followed by a goal from
Kelly Logue and another from Soures in under four minutes to re-take an 8-7 lead with 11:11 remaining the third quarter.
The Gaels (6-3, 0-1 MAAC) tied it back up at eight apiece on a goal Kira Virada on a man-down situation and once again tied at nine on a score from Alyssa Castellano with 4:06 left, but that's as close as they would get for the rest of the game.
Saints' goalkeeper
Sabrina Krasner (eight saves) and the rest of the Siena defense allowed no goals in the remaining 19 plus minutes.
Soures, Wangsness, Logue and
Jordan Bentley all scored in the fourth quarter to seal it.
Saints were narrowly outshot 31-29 and were even on shots on target with 17 apiece. Siena won 16 of 26 draw controls and the teams were nearly split on ground balls (Siena held a 16-14 advantage).
Siena will return home to Hickey Field to host Marist (2-7, 0-1 MAAC) on Wednesday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
Siena defeated the Red Foxes 15-11 in their last meeting on March 30, 2022 and have won their last four meetings against them.
