Water Polo Begins Home Weekend with Conference Action

Saints Battled Marist, St. Francis Brooklyn at Siena Swim Center

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Water Polo took the pool at the Siena Swim Center in Loudonville, New York for the first time this season on Saturday as part of a six-game, five-team conference weekend hosted by the Green and Gold. The Saints (4-15, 0-4) dropped a 19-11 decision to rival Marist before falling in a 14-8 loss to St. Francis Brooklyn.

The Red Foxes – who received votes in the latest CWPA Top-25 Poll – scored the first six goals of the game and held a 12-2 advantage at the half. The Saints matched their opponents with three goals on power play opportunities in the third period and scored six of ten goals in the fourth period, but the damage had been done by the Red Foxes in the first half of play.

Marist held a 32-26 shots advantage and won three of four sprints, with Viktoria Orlova leading the way offensively with five goals. Freshman Parker Thomas netted a hat trick and added a pair of assists for five total points for the Saints, while classmate Stella Chopskie also scored three goals. Senior Anna Mossakowski made five saves and also scored a goal for Siena, while junior goalkeeper Caroline Behr recorded a pair of saves.

St. Francis Brooklyn 14, Siena 8

Siena again fell behind early in the nightcap, with the Terriers netting the first four and seven of the first eight goals leading to a 10-3 halftime advantage. Siena held a 5-4 second half advantage and netted each of the last three goals, but could not come within six during the final 16 minutes of play. Siena still held a 34-31 advantage in shots on the day.

St. Francis Brooklyn's Sydney DeVroedt put on a monster performance with seven goals and four assists for a total of 11 points. Sophomore Cece White led seven different Siena scorers with a pair of goals, while Mossakowski recorded six saves and Behr made three.

Siena will round out weekend action by celebrating Senior Day at the Siena Swim Center against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, March 26 at 1 PM.
