FAIRFIELD, CT – Siena Softball opened up a busy week in the Northeast on a high note Wednesday afternoon. After dropping three of its last four contests, the Saints (14-8) rebounded to perform a midweek series sweep of non-conference foe Sacred Heart at Pioneer Park in Fairfield, Connecticut, taking home 2-0 and 2-0 shutout victories.
Siena 2, Sacred Heart 0
The Saints and the Pioneers opened with three scoreless frames until Siena struck in the top of the fourth with an RBI double down the left field line from senior
Shannon Bonewit that sent in classmate
Jocelyn Ulrich.
Riding along thanks to the fourth complete game and first shutout of the season from graduate student
Ava Fitzmaurice, the defense induced a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth and stranded the bases loaded in the fifth to set up the first home run of the season from senior
Emma McLaughlin to extend the lead in the top of the sixth.
Fitzmaurice (5-3) allowed just four hits and struck out five, while runs batted in from Bonewit and McLaughlin steadied eight different players with a hit offensively.
Siena 3, Sacred Heart 0
The Green and Gold followed up the impressive opener by securing its first doubleheader shutout since April 25, 2015 and its third consecutive doubleheader sweep over the Pioneers. Freshman
Alissa Eimont and Sacred Heart's Liv Vadas went toe-to-toe in the circle with no hits until the top of the fourth.
A no-hit bid from Vadas was swiftly ended to start the sixth inning thanks to a single from Bonewit, which was followed by a sacrifice bunt, a one-bagger from graduate student
Sabrina Vargas, and a two-run triple from junior
Isabella Pardo to cap things off and put the Saints on the board. Sophomore
McKenzie Swinson immediately followed with an RBI single to plate Pardo and further the Siena advantage on the next at-bat.
Siena held a 6-3 hits advantage with Eimont (3-3) logging four strikeouts in her first collegiate shutout and Bonewit's multi-hit performance leading the team offensively.
The Saints will look to translate midweek success into MAAC play, with home doubleheader series' against Saint Peter's and Manhattan scheduled for this weekend at Siena Softball Field.
