Softball Opens Eight-Game Home Stand with Sweep

Saints Took 4-1 and 10-3 Wins Over Army West Point on Thursday

LOUDONVILLE, NY – The daunt of playing ten games over the span of seven days has not seemed to have fazed Siena Softball one bit thus far. After collecting a road doubleheader sweep on Wednesday to begin the busy week, The Saints (24-10) did the same to Army West Point (16-25) at Siena Softball Field on Thursday afternoon to begin an eight-game home stand, taking 4-1 and 10-3 wins in a toasty twin bill.

Siena 4, Army West Point 1

Facing off against the Black Knights for the first time since 2019 and marking just the second-ever Siena Softball doubleheader televised on ESPN Plus, The Saints got on the board in the home half of the third in the form of a milestone hit. After completing four years at Siena and making a last-minute return to the team for a fifth season, graduate student Sabrina Vargas eclipsed the 100-hit mark on her collegiate career with an infield single to short that allowed redshirt-junior Diana Parker to score.

Working behind a pitching gem from graduate student Ava Fitzmaurice in the circle, the Saints continued to run up the score in the fifth inning, with Fitzmaurice scoring Parker on another RBI single to short and senior Angelina Stile doubling to left to allow Fitzmaurice and Vargas to cross home. Army West Point finally broke through on the board with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but left a pair on-base to end the game.

Siena held a 6-5 hits advantage, with Vargas and Parker each turning in multi-hit outings. Fitzmaurice (9-4) struck out eight in a complete game win in the circle, while Army West Point's Breanna Izzo (6-3) took the complete game loss with three strikeouts.

Siena 10, Army West Point 3

Army West Point countered with offense of its own to begin the second game, with an RBI single coming in the top of the first and a solo home run in the visiting half of the second making it 2-0 Black Knights early. It was nearly all Saints from there on out, beginning with a game-tying frame in the third. Fitzmaurice singled down the right field line to score Vargas, while Stile dropped a single to left center to allow Fitzmaurice to cross home.

Siena took the lead for good in the home half of the fifth, with Stile plating junior Isabella Pardo on an RBI ground out and senior Jocelyn Ulrich singling up the middle to allow Fitzmaurice and Vargas score yet again. Sophomore Ashley Giampolo made it a 6-2 Siena lead with an RBI infield single to cap the inning.

The Black Knights got back on the board in the sixth with another solo home run, but the Saints unloaded in the bottom of the frame by scoring four more runs. Pardo stole second and allowed sophomore McKenzie Swinson to score on an error, while Stile scored Pardo on an RBI single, senior Shannon Bonewit stole second to lead to Vargas coming home on an error, and Ulrich bringing Bonewit home on an RBI single.

Siena doubled up on hits, 12-6, and stole six bases to finish the day just one swipe off tying the single-season program record for stolen bases set in 1979 (74). Swinson took her 18th base of the year to tie her for the most in a single season in program history. Stile had a three-hit outing and joined Ulrich with a trio of RBI's apiece, while Parker recorded her second win in the circle in as many days, striking out three over six innings to improve to 4-0 on the year. Army's Amanda Eaglin (5-7) took the loss by allowing four runs in one and two-thirds innings.

Having outscored opponents, 24-5, over the last two doubleheaders, Siena will prepare for two pivotal conference doubleheaders at home this weekend, beginning by hosting Marist on Saturday, April 15 at Noon & 2 PM.
