Donovan Montgomery tallied career-highs of five hits and three doubles to lead Siena Baseball past defending Northeast Conference Champion LIU 8-2 out on Long Island. Montgomery went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate for the Saints who exploded for seven unanswered runs over the final three innings to prevail.
Montgomery also both scored and drove in three runs apiece as part of a career afternoon.
Aiden Stewart added two hits including the clutch, go-ahead two-run single in the seventh for Siena (7-29, 2-7) which pounded out 13 hits.
A trio of relief pitchers scattered 10 hits and just two runs, led by six solid innings of relief from
Sebastian Bentz who earned his first win as a Saint.
Sean Camacho broke a scoreless tie through four innings with an RBI single to get Siena on the board first in the fifth. LIU (10-24, 8-7) responded with back-to-back two-out extra base hits in the sixth to briefly take a 2-1 lead.
The Saints loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh. But following a strike out and a foul out, it was up to Stewart to try and salvage the opportunity. With the count full, Stewart just got a piece of a foul tip which the catcher could not hold, giving him another life. Stewart made him pay, delivering the go-ahead two-run double to put Siena back in front.
Randall Hien followed and capped the three-run frame with an infield single which knocked in another run.
The Saints added a pair of insurance runs on RBI hits from Montgomery and
Gavin Thorburn in the eighth, and Montgomery capped the scoring with a two-run double in the ninth.
Siena continues a busy five-game week Wednesday with their lone home contest when they host Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m. at Connors Park.
