Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Saints Run Out Of Time at Niagara; Will be No. 2 Seed in MAAC Tournament

Wangsness Leads Siena with Four Goals

Siena Women's Lacrosse had a defensive lull in the first half and ran out of time as a shot on net by the Saints' offense was saved by MAAC Reigning Rookie of the Week Katie Ling in the final seconds as Siena fell 13-12 at Niagara Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Siena (11-6 overall, 6-2 MAAC) now knows its playoff positioning for certain as it has concluded its regular season slate and will be the No. 2 seed.
The Saints will draw an opening round bye and will await the winners of the to-be-determined rounds of the No. 3-No. 6 and No. 4-No. 5 match ups.

The Saints will have a 16-day break and would play the highest remaining seed on Friday, May 5 at a time to be determined.

With Fairfield's 13-3 win over Manhattan on Wednesday, the Stags have clinched the No.1 seed and home field advantage for the MAAC Semifinals and Championship. There is a four-game slate scheduled for this Saturday in the MAAC that will determine the other seedings.

Siena jumped out a 3-1 early advantage courtesy of a pair of goals off the stick of senior attack Katy Wangsness, who finished with a team-high four goals on the day.

From there, there were four ties leading up to a 6-6 score with 10:11 remaining in the second quarter.

The Purple Eagles (10-6, 4-3 MAAC) were lifted by the play of Rachel Crane, who scored six of her game-high seven goals in the first half as Niagara carried a 10-7 advantage into the break.

Siena closed to within 10-9 after redshirt sophomore midfielder Jordan Bentley and sophomore attack Kelly Logue each scored on unassisted goals with 4:26 left in the third quarter.  Niagara answered with three consecutive marks, one each by Jaclyn Crane, Lois Garlow and another by Rachel Crane to push the lead to 13-9 with 13:50 left in the game.

Logue, Wangsness and Bentley all scored over the next 10 plus minutes to make it interesting and got the Saints within a goal with 3:35 on the clock.  Siena won a hard-earned draw control, called a timeout, and had a shot on goal by Grace Dobrzynski, but it was saved by Ling.

Niagara carried a 16-7 advantage in ground balls, but the majority of other stats were virtually even between the teams.

Bentley, Dobrzynski and Logue each had two goals and one assist.  Bentley led the team with six draw controls.

Mary Soures had a goal and an assist.  The fifth-year midfielder now has 218 career points and would need nine points to tie Nicole McNeely (227 points) for most points scored in program history.
