Siena Baseball capped its historic season-opening, program-record 27-game road trip with a statement win. The Saints snapped a 15-game losing streak and gave interim head coach
Joe Sheridan a signature first victory with a 7-4 triumph over two-time defending Southern Conference Regular Season Champion Wofford.
Siena (3-24, 0-3) capitalized off its week-long offensive awakening, recording a season-high 14 hits while also tying a season-best with three home runs for the third time in four games this week. The Saints scored six times in the first seven innings as part of a balanced attack to claim a 7-1 lead.
Wofford (20-7, 2-1) halved the lead with a three-run homer from Jack Renwick in the home half of the seventh, but
Noah Rodriguez followed out of the bullpen to retire all seven batters he faced to slam the door shut of the first Siena victory in nearly a month, dating back to a doubleheader sweep on Mar. 4 at Miami (OH), accounting for the Saints' other two wins so far this season.
Willie Schwarick,
Vincenzo Castronovo, and
Vincent DiNicola all homered for Siena, with DiNicola leading the way offensively with three hits and three RBI. Freshman
Aiden Stewart wrapped up a phenomenal 9-17 week at the dish with three hits of his own, and was on base four times while scoring a pair of runs. Schwarick and
Gavin Thorburn also produced multi-hit efforts.
Freshman
Ryan Bates went 6.2 solid innings to earn the marquee victory over a Wofford team which entered play ranked 42
nd nationally in the latest RPI.
Following a nomadic start to their season which took them to seven different states spanning 44 days, Siena will finally make its long-awaited 2023 home debut this coming week. The Saints are scheduled to open a season-long nine-game homestand spanning just 12 days when they host Fordham in non-conference action Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Connors Park.
