Softball Grinds Out Road Sweep of Rider

Saints Grabbed a Pair of One-Run Wins in New Jersey

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Wins haven't come easy for Siena Softball this season, but they sure have done a lot of it thus far. The Saints (31-13, 10-3) continued and unconventional five-game road trip with a pair of one-run road wins over MAAC foe Rider (13-25, 3-7) at Herb & Joan Young Field in Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Sunday, taking 3-2 and 4-3 victories to improve to 14-4 in road play this season.

Siena also clinched its second consecutive 30-win season as part of the win in the doubleheader opener, marking the first time in program history that the Saints have recorded 30 or more wins in consecutive campaigns. With nine regular season games remaining, the team is just two wins away from breaking the program record for wins (32) set last season.

Siena 3, Rider 2

The conference rivals – who last met in a MAAC Quarterfinal elimination game won by Siena – exchanged runs in the early innings, with senior Angelina Stile singling to center field to plate junior Isabella Pardo in the bottom of the first and Rider responding by scoring a run on a fielding error in the top of the second.

Following back-and-forth innings between Siena's Alissa Eimont and rider's Jessie Niegocki in in the circle, the Saints took the lead for good in the fifth thanks to Stile once again, who doubled to left field to allow Pardo and sophomore Ashley Giampolo to score. Rider responded with an RBI double of its own to come back within a run in the bottom of the inning, but saw the last eight batters of the game go down in order.

Both teams recorded five hits, with Stile's two-hit, three-RBI day leading the way for Siena offensively, Eimont (10-4) took the win with one strikeout in five innings, while graduate student Ava Fitzmaurice earned her third save of the year with two no-hit innings during the final stretch of the game. Niegocki (6-10) took the complete game loss despite seven strikeouts.

Siena 4, Rider 3
The Broncs responded by nearly shutting out the Saints in the second game, beginning with an RBI single in the first inning. Out-hit, 11-7, during the contest, Siena could not get any offense started through the middle innings, with the home team extending its lead to three via a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Siena saved its best for last by loading up the bases in the seventh inning for Giampolo, who cleared them with an RBI triple to right field to immediately tie the game. Pardo shut the door with an RBI single to give the Saints a crooked frame and the lead for good in the top of the seventh, with Rider leaving the potential game-tying and game-winning runs on-base to end the game.

Stile recorded two more hits in game two, including one in the seventh that put her at 100 for her collegiate career and made her the fourth Saint this season to cross the 100-hit threshold in a Siena uniform. Fitzmaurice (12-4) moved into a tie for the fourth-most single-season pitching wins in program history with a pair of strikeouts in a complete game triumph in the circle. Rider's Kathryn Schmeirer (3-9) took the loss with six strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Siena's newly-extended weekend will pour over into Monday, April 24, as the Saints will head back to Emmitsburg, Maryland to resume a game that they lead, 2-0, against Mount St. Mary's in the top of the fourth that was suspended by inclement weather on Saturday. First pitch is set for Noon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.
