Saints Fall at Fairfield

Soures, Bentley notch hat tricks

In the battle of the two remaining undefeated teams in the MAAC, Siena fell short 17-9 at Fairfield's Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium on Saturday afternoon to snap a five-game winning streak.

Siena (9-5 overall, 4-1 MAAC) traded the first six goals of the game back and forth before the Stags took control with a distinct advantage in getting quality shots.

Fairfield outshot Siena 36-20 for the game including 27-14 in shots on target.

The Saints were able to keep draw controls nearly 50/50 throughout the opening three quarters, but committed its second highest turnover amount in a single game with 16.

Transitioning to offense, the Stags (9-3 overall, 4-0 MAAC) made their opportunities count when they had their chance.

Converting on 17 of 27 shots on goal, the Stags made good on 62 percent of their shots on point.

With the game tied at three apiece, Fairfield scored twice in the last 18 seconds of the opening quarter on unassisted goals off the stick of Elizabeth Talluto, her 35th of the season, and Ellie Grefenstette, to make a 5-3 Fairfield advantage.

Siena was led by fifth-year midfielder Mary Soures and redshirt sophomore midfielder Jordan Bentley, who each recorded hat tricks on the day.

Bentley also had a team-high five draw controls.

But the pressure on Saints' senior goalkeeper Sabrina Krasner was too much.

While Krasner made several quick-handed saves on the afternoon and finished with 10 saves, she faced nine shots and allowed six goals in the third quarter as Fairfield took command with a 15-6 lead after three.

Talluto, Grefenstette and Rylee Harrell all finished with three goals apiece to lead the Stags.

In doing so, the Saints also had their defensive streak of holding opponents to single digit scoring in four straight games snapped.

A bright note for the Saints was the play of sophomore attack Grace Dobrzynski, who moved closer to becoming the 18th player in program history to record 100 points.

Her goal and three assists placed her at 99 career points.

Dobrzynski and Siena will have their next opportunity when they host Quinnipiac (6-6 overall, 2-2 MAAC) this Wednesday at 4 p.m. from Hickey Field.

The Bobcats won a thriller 15-14 over Manhattan on Saturday.

The Saints have beaten Quinnipiac four consecutive times including last year's 13-12 victory in Hamden, CT.
