Siena Baseball established season-highs in hits (21), stolen bases (five), and home runs (four) to secure their first MAAC series victory of the season with a 15-3 mercy rule triumph over Saint Peter's in eight innings in the rubber game of the series in Jersey City.
A total of seven different Siena (12-36, 6-12) players produced multi-hit efforts in an all-around offensive onslaught. Six different Saints scored multiple runs, and three collective multiple RBI as part of a balanced offensive attack. Siena accounted for all 15 runs over five innings, scoring multiple runs in each frame.
Freshman
Danny Barbero homered in consecutive innings in the fifth and sixth, driving in a career-best six runs on the afternoon in his first collegiate multi-homer performance. He smashed a two-run blast to extend the lead to 5-1 in the fifth, before connecting for a grand slam to blow the game open in the sixth.
Vincent DiNicola and
Matt Livingston also homered for the Saints. DiNicola led the way with a four-hit performance while also driving in four runs, and Livingston was one of five Siena players with at least three hits.
The Saints also received a strong relief outing from
Alistair Morin who went the final 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out a career-high eight.
Siena will look to build off its first conference series win of the year, and keep its MAAC Tournament hopes alive, when they open a crucial three-game series at new league foe Mount St. Mary's Thursday at 3 p.m. in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
