Men’s Soccer Falls to Rider in MAAC Opener

Broncs Edged Out Saints in New Jersey

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer continued a grueling four-match road trip by opening up conference play in the 2023 season on Saturday. The Saints (0-5) dropped a tight 1-0 decision to MAAC foe Rider (3-1-2) at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

After playing defending national champion Syracuse to a no contest after 56 minutes earlier this week, the Saints held Rider scoreless in the first half of action, with freshman goalkeeper Bennet Glinder successfully defending against all five shots on-net.

Following multiple offensive opportunities put forth by junior forward Zach Gardner, the Broncs broke through in the 64th minute, with Luke Kirilenko putting away a ball on the right with a right-footed shot from the top of the box following a service from the opposite lane.

Rider successfully defended for the remainder of the match and ultimately held a 20-11 shots advantage on the afternoon. Senior midfielder Cole Hellert led seven different Siena shot-takers with three attempts on the day, while Glinder finished the match with a career-high five saves.

Siena will head back into non-league play on Tuesday, September 19 when it heads to Burlington, Vermont to battle #12 Vermont at 6 PM.
