LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball fought back to extend the match with an efficient third set against Quinnipiac on home Sunday at the UHY Center before bowing out in four (22-25, 16-25, 25-19, 13-25).
Siena (1-13, 1-3 MAAC) had some opportunities, but failed to get the rally it needed down the stretch.
In the opening set, the Saints came back from a 19-12 deficit to make it 21-20 with two kills from
Anny Montano, and one each from
Olga Sawinska and
Sara Wagner in the run.
Kills by the Bobcats' Ginevra Giovagnoni and Alexandra Tennon as well as two Saints attack errors aided Quinnipiac to a 25-22 set win.
The Bobcats (8-5, 4-0 MAAC) went out ahead 11-5 to begin the second set and the Saints could not get any closer than within four points for the remainder of the set. Quinnipiac hit .448 with 16 kills against just three errors on 29 total attacks while Siena evened out with seven kills and seven errors on a total of 24 attacks.
Siena made it interesting by rallying back with a strong third set, in which the team hit .250 (12 kills against just four errors on 32 attacks). Trailing 4-2, Siena responded by winning seven of the following eight points to grab a 9-5 edge.
Freshmen
Ella Treasure and
Kayla Jones combined to make three blocks and Wagner recorded an ace during that spurt.
Ahead 14-9, Siena went on a 6-2 run to open a 20-11 lead. Wagner and Jones tallied two kills apiece while
Monet Latunde and Sawinska also picked one up. Siena was able to close the set on a Sawinska stuff to make it 25-19.
In the fourth set, the Bobcats held a 7-4 lead and then opened it up with a 9-2 run to pull ahead 16-6 after four attack errors and a bad set by the Saints.
Wagner led the Saints with 15 kills on a .235 hitting percentage to go along with six digs.
Claire Isaksen had a team-high 23 assists with six digs and
Payton Hinkle amassed 11 digs.
Latunde and Jones each had five blocks and four kills.
Continuing in conference action, Siena will travel to New Jersey to take on Rider (3-9, 2-2 MAAC) this Saturday at 1 p.m.
