The future is now. Freshmen
Abby Daly and
Megan Stowell scored highlight reel goals to lead Siena Women's Soccer to its first conference win with a 2-1 victory at Saint Peter's.
Daly staked Siena (2-6-2, 1-1-1) to an early advantage, scoring just 2:36 into the action. The freshman corralled a loose ball and blasted home a 30-yard rocket across into the lower left corner for her first collegiate goal.
Siena held a 6-2 shot advantage in the opening stanza, but Saint Peter's (3-5, 1-2) made the most of one of their few chances in the 23
rd minute when Alyssa Hackett netted the equalizer.
The Saints returned the favor in the second half as although the Peacocks flipped the shot total 6-2 in their favor, it was Siena which cashed in with the decisive tally. In the 69
th minute,
Grace George sent a long ball down the right sideline to
Julia Dening who one-touched ahead to her classmate. Stowell beat both her defender and the hard-charging keeper to the ball, and finished in deep from a tough angle across on the right for her first collegiate game-winner.
Accounting for five of the team's six points on the afternoon, the Saints top-three scorers now so far this season are freshmen in Stowell (nine points), Dening (six), and Daly (four).
Angela Fini made three saves for Siena which had dropped three of their previous four against Saint Peter's.
The Saints will have yet another full week to prepare for their next MAAC matchup. Siena concludes its season-long three-match road trip next Wednesday night when they travel to I-87 rival Marist for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Poughkeepsie.
