Quinnipiac Edges Out Siena Volleyball

Hollas leads Saints with 10 kills, eight digs

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Playing versus one of the top teams atop the MAAC Volleyball standings, Siena Volleyball lost a tightly-played match to Quinnipiac 3-0 (27-29, 19-25, 20-25) on Sunday afternoon at the UHY Center. 

Siena (4-17, 3-6 MAAC) was sharper than the Bobcats in efficiency, hitting .152 compared to Quinnipiac's .143 hitting percentage as a team. 

But, the Saints were befallen by reception errors with nine compared to the Bobcats' two. 

In a seesaw battle, Siena and Quinnipiac played to 17 ties and four lead changes throughout the match.  The Saints were able to storm back in the first set after trailing 14-9 to lock the score at 22 apiece on a series of kills from Salme Adeele Hollas, Ella Treasure, Doga Diraz and Olga Sawinska

The teams traded blows with four kills off the hand of Quinnipiac's Yagmur Gunes and two kills from Siena's Hollas and one from Sonja Meyer in extended play.  Yagmur Gunes finished it off with a point for a 29-27 win. 

In the second set, Quinnipiac (10-11, 7-2 MAAC) led 12-5 with help from Leilani-kai Giusta and the serving of Carola Negron Diaz. 

Trailing 23-13, Siena battled back with a 6-0 run behind the serving of Maggie Seymour to make it interesting.  Alandra Hasbrouck, Treasure and Sawinska all had kills during the rally.  Quinnipiac finally closed with a pair of kills to win by six points. 

In the third set, Siena took a 14-8 lead with a highlighted ace from Hollas. 

The Bobcats ran off six of seven points to even the score at 16-all.  

The teams went back and forth up to a 20 apiece tie before Quinnipiac closed the match on a 5-0 run capped by an ace from Alexandra Tennon.

Siena is back in action Saturday on the road at Fairfield (11-9, 9-0 MAAC) at 1 p.m.
