Siena Volleyball was tasked with facing the MAAC's lone remaining undefeated team in the conference and played a competitive first set before ultimately falling in three sets (22-25, 14-25, 13-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, CT.
Siena (4-18, 3-7 MAAC) hit a team-high .313 in the opener and fought to several ties including the last at 22-22, getting help with kills from
Sara Wagner,
Olga Sawinska and
Claire Isaksen to knot it.
The Stags (12-10, 10-0 MAAC) closed it out with a kill each from Maya Walker and Allie Elliott.
Siena fell behind 11-3 to begin the second set when the Stags went on a 6-0 run sparked by Elliott's serving and the frontline play of Walker, Mikayla Haut and Svenja Rodenbusch.
Three straight points by Siena from
Doga Diraz, an attack error from Mamie Krubally and a kill from Isaksen got Siena within 16-8, but that's as close as it would get in the set. Elliott put down three more kills and notched an ace down the stretch for the Stags.
Fairfield took a 9-7 lead in the third set as
Salme Adeele Hollas kept it close with a pair of kills for the Saints. The Stags went on a 5-0 run with the serving of Blakey Montgomery and the attacks from Krubally, Haut and Harlan Wyche. The Stags won six of seven points later in the set for the comfortable win.
Fairfield hit .364 as a team compared to Siena's .162. Hollas led Siena with 11 kills on a .273 hitting percentage and eight digs and two blocks. Junior libero
Amelia Robertson had a season-high in digs with 14.
Elliott had a game-high 13 kills while Krubally added 10 kills to lead Fairfield.
Siena will play at Sacred Heart (9-12, 5-4 MAAC) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
