LOUDONVILLE, NY - Facing a late 1-0 deficit to the visiting Canisius Golden Griffins,
Dren Dobruna connected with
Cole Hellert in the 70th minute to tie the match for Siena Men's Soccer, and ultimately lead to a 1-1 draw from Hickey Field on Wednesday evening.
Siena moves to 5-3-5 overall and 3-0-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, while Canisius goes to 2-8-3 overall and 0-3-2 in the MAAC.
Hellert's goal served as his third of the season, while Dobruna tied a 14-year program record with his ninth assist of the season. The freshman brings himself within one of surpassing James Beeston and Joey Tavernese, who both produced nine in the 2010 season.
Mario Navarro Perez and Hellert led the team with three shots each, combining for six of the Saints' 14 total. The team out-shot Canisius 14-5 (5-3 on-goal), including 10-3 in the second half. Siena also had a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks.
In goal,
Bennet Glinder made a pair of saves, while counterpart Jack Petrie had four. Josh Miller produced the lone Griffins' goal which came in the 50th minute.
The first half produced limited action, with the Saints out-shooting the Griffins 4-2, while Canisius served the lone shot on target by either side.
Both teams picked up the attack in the second half, with Miller's tally midway through the 50th minute being the first shot registered for either team in the half.
After 20 minutes down by a goal, the Saints finally broke through midway through the 70th. Off a lofting cross by Dobruna, Hellert positioned himself within the box to send a header past the left side of Petrie for the equalizer. After discussion from the officials, the goal stood for a 1-1 match.
Over the last 20 minutes of play, the Saints out-shot the Griffins 7-0 - including two on-goal by
Alexander Zielonka, and one from
Lee Mara - but to no avail as the match ended in the 1-1 draw.
The Saints are back in action on Saturday in a road match at Rider. Kickoff from Lawrenceville, NJ is set for 7 p.m.
