Siena Women's Soccer is headed back to the postseason. The Saints earned the program's first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament berth in three seasons in dramatic fashion. After relinquishing the lead in the 85
th minute, sophomore captain
Abby Daly scored the postseason clincher with just 1:59 remaining as Siena stunned Niagara 2-1 in Western New York.
Siena (9-7-2, 6-3-2) controlled play throughout to secure their second separate three-match win streak this season. The Saints held decided advantages in both shots (19-6) and corner kicks (9-0) to earn their sixth win away from home this fall, marking the second most true road wins in program single-season history. Siena won a program record eight road matches on their way to capturing their first MAAC Tournament Championship in 2010.
MAAC leading scorer
Megan Stowell opened the scoring with her eighth goal in the 26
th minute. Daly tapped a free kick to Stowell who one-timed home a 30-yard rocket across into the top left corner.
The Saints tried to salt things away late, but Niagara (5-7-3, 1-6-3) converted a rare opportunity with just 5:08 left. Isabella Mazzaferro finished a long-range marker to give the Purple Eagles life. The goal snapped a six-match scoreless streak for Niagara dating back to Sept. 21 vs. Fairfield, spanning 679:38.
But Siena would not be denied in locking up the program's first MAAC Tournament berth since 2021 on their own terms. In the 89
th minute,
Sarah Harnett played a long ball back in to
Catherine Rogers, who got the first touch going away on the left side of the box. Rogers kicked the ball over her head to the oncoming Daly who one-timed home the match-winner into the far corner.
Maddie Crosbie made 11 saves for the Purple Eagles who are now winless in nine straight (0-6-3) following a promising 5-1 start to their season.
The Saints have the league bye this weekend before they look to head into postseason play on a high note. Siena hosts I-87 rival Marist in the regular season finale next Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. on Hickey Field.
