Volleyball Finds Its Rhythm in Sweeping Sacred Heart

Wagner leads way with 13 kills on a .385

Siena Volleyball bounced back in a big way by sweeping Sacred Heart 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 27-25) for an important conference road victory on Sunday afternoon at the William H. Pitt Athletic Center in Fairfield, CT.

Siena (5-18, 4-7 MAAC) played more efficiently in all three sets against the Pioneers and battled back in the third set when SHU had a set point opportunity with a 24-22 lead.

However, the Saints rallied back to win five of six points including an ace from Claire Isaksen and a kill from Sina Toroslu to complete the comeback.

Siena also trailed 18-16 in the opening set, but reeled off five consecutive points with two kills from Salme Adeele Hollas in the stretch.  Olga Sawinska ended it on a kill to close the opening set.

The Saints jumped out to a big early lead in the second set, capturing a 13-4 edge with Hannah Bowman and Toroslu each picking up an ace.  SHU would close to within four, but Sara Wagner and Toroslu would get a kill apiece to close it.

The Polish outside hitting duo of Wagner (13 kills on a .385 hitting percentage, four digs) and Sawinska (nine kills on a .353 hitting percentage, five blocks) led the way for the Saints.

Siena improved to 5-2 in matches when it hits at least .236 as a team this season.

This marked the first time in program history that Siena defeated Sacred Heart in volleyball. The Pioneers (10-13, 6-5 MAAC) had defeated the Saints in the previous two meetings back in 2014 and 2011.

Siena, who is currently ninth in the conference standings, stands one game behind Iona and Merrimack for the seventh and eighth positions.  The top eight teams qualify for the MAAC Tournament.

The Saints will play at Marist (1-20, 1-10 MAAC) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
