Siena Volleyball equaled its longest set played this season, but came away on the wrong side of it in a heartbreaker at MAAC rival Marist 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 16-25, 32-34) on Wednesday night at McCann Arena.
The loss keeps Siena (5-19, 4-8 MAAC) just outside of playoff position in the conference standings where the top eight teams qualify for the tournament set for Nov. 21-24 from the UHY Center. The Saints are currently in ninth and one game behind Merrimack.
The Saints got off to a terrific start, hitting 462 in the opening set to win the first set by five points.
In the second set, Siena trailed 19-14 and was able to string together four straight points with kills from
Sara Wagner and
Amelia Robertson as well as two attack errors from the Red Foxes.
Marist's Trinity Woods picked up two kills to put them up three before Sara Dasic closed it out with three consecutive kills.
In the third set, Marist hit .292 in the set for the comfortable win to take a two-sets to one lead.
In the fourth set, Siena jumped out to a 12-5 advantage highlighted by a pair of kills from
Sonja Meyer, and a kill each from Wagner,
Sina Toroslu and
Salme Adeele Hollas followed by an ace off the hand of Toroslu. Marist responded with a 10-0 run behind the serving of Jamison White.
Siena rallied back to tie it at 24-all and took the lead on an ace from
Oliwia Majtyka to set point. The teams traded off set point chances nine consecutive times before a kill from Taylor Miller and a Siena attack error sealed it.
Hollas led the Saints with 15 kills on a .438 hitting percentage with four digs. Wagner had 10 kills while
Claire Isaksen added 22 assists and seven digs.
The Saints will return home to take on Rider (10-15, 9-3 MAAC) this Saturday at 2 p.m. from the UHY Center.
