Siena Swimming & Diving fell in its season-opener to MAAC foe Iona, 159-135, in a neutral site dual meet on Friday evening. The meet was hosted by New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ from the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
The freshman duo of
Sydney Murray and
Claire Donlon shined in both the 1 & 3 meter dive. The pair took first and second in both events, with Murray claiming the 1m dive (184.35), and Donlon taking second (180.15). The newcomers traded places in the 3m dive, with Donlon claiming first (191.70), and Murray finishing runner-up (176.50).
Siena had another one-two finish in the 50 free as
Shaylea Triller opened up her senior season with a win, timing 24.58 to just miss on a top-10 program mark. Classmate
Kylie Carter claimed second in 25.47, while newcomer
Gabrielle Rentosa took fourth (25.60).
Rentosa earned her first collegiate victory in the 100 back, clocking in at 1:01.03.
Mary Ellen Stratman took third with a time of 1:01.62. Classmate
Leslie Dame earned a win in the 100 breast in 1:07.66, just beating out the second place finisher by .10 seconds.
Hope Ivanovich's time of 59.56 in the 100 fly just missed top-10 in her second place finish in the 100 fly, while Rentosa took second in 1:01.19. Ivanovich also placed second in the 200 fly, coming in at 2:13.66.
Mea Amedio (2:13.48),
Carsyn Ide (2:14.13), and
Alice Scalmani (2:19.30) took second through fourth in the 200 IM,
Ide's time of 2:10.53 in the 200 back narrowly missed a top-10 time, while Amedio (2:13.98), and Stratman (2:14.87) helped cap-off a second through fourth finish in the event for the Saints.
Siena's other top-five finishers included Amedio (2md, 1:59.03) and
Maddie Buck (4th, 2:01.70in the 200 free; Carter (3rd, 2:32.03), Dame (4th, 2:36.02) and
Olivia Martin (5th, 2:36.03) in the 200 breast; Blume (3rd, 11:08.67) and
GayLynn Kirn (4th, 11:12.55) in the 1000 free; and Blume (4th, 5:26.69) and Buck (5th, 5:33.06) in the 500 free.
The Saints' top relay teams included
Camryn Raines, Kirn, Dame, and Blume in the 400 free (2nd, 3:40.81); and Ide, Dame, Ivanovich, and Triller in the 200 medley (2nd, 1:50.22);
Siena returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when the team travels to take on Rhode Island at noon.
