Saints Score Two Unanswered in Second Half to Draw with Niagara

Down, but far from out. Trailing 3-1 at halftime, Siena Men's Soccer rattled off a pair of goals in the second to half to draw with Niagara, and pick up a point in the MAAC standings on Saturday from Niagara Field in Niagara University, NY.

Dren Dobruna played a part in each of the team's three scores, assisting on all of them to come within one of tying the program's single-match record of four set in 1995 by Kristian Kraszewsk.

Mario Navarro Perez ('10, 2), Zach Gardner ('59, 3), and Cole Hellert ('67, 2) scored for the Saints, with Hellert's game-winner serving as the second of this season, as well as of his career. Olafur Freysson also had a pair of secondary assists in the win.

Following an uncharacteristic opening half, Bennet Glinder responded by keeping Niagara off the board in the second to keep Siena in the match. He totaled seven saves in the draw, two of which in the second half.

The Saints (3-3-4, 1-0-1 MAAC)) out-shot the Purple Eagles (2-6-2, 0-1-1 MAAC) 15-5 in the second half, while also commanding corner kicks, 3-1.

Siena struck first in the 10th minute when Dobruna provided an exceptional cross to Navarro Perez, who headed it in for a quick 1-0 advantage.

However, from that point Niagara began to close off lanes and set up its own scoring opportunities. The Purple Eagles scored three goals across a 20-minute span to close the half ahead 3-1.

Navarro Perez's goal proved to be the lone on-goal for the Saints in the half, as Niagara ended the first frame with a 9-4 total shot advantage, and 8-1 on target. The hosts also edged Siena 3-1 on corners over the first 45 minutes.

Still trailing by two in the 59th minute, Gardner pulled the Saints within one with his third tally of the season by way of Dobruna's second assist of the match, with the secondary coming from Freysson.

Not long after, Freysson and Dobruna created yet another Saints opportunity; this time for Cole Hellert, who's 67th minute header snuck past the reach of Niagara goalie Jamie Barry to even the score.

Following Hellert's equalizer, Siena fired off seven shots to Niagara's four, but to no avail for either side to bring the game to a 3-3 draw.

Siena remains on the road next weekend for its first-ever MAAC bout against Merrimack. Kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 12 is set for 4 p.m. from North Andover, MA.
