Women’s Soccer Snaps Another Major Win Streak

LODONVILLE, NY – For the second straight home match, Siena Women's Soccer snapped one of the nation's longest active winning streaks. The Saints battled MAAC frontrunner Canisius to a scoreless draw on Hickey Field, ending what was the second longest active win streak in the country at eight straight.

Just 10 days after extinguishing what was then the nation's fourth longest active winning streak at six in a row with a 1-1 draw vs. Fairfield in their most recent home contest, Siena (6-6-2, 3-2-2) once again played spoilers. Freshman keeper Cate Burns anchored a stout back line with six saves as the Saints handed Canisius (9-1-2, 6-0-1) their first blemish in exactly five weeks. The Golden Griffins had arrived in Loudonville trailing only Duke (nine) for the second longest active win streak nationally.

Off to its best start in program history, Canisius, which entered play ranked fifth nationally in goals against average having allowed just four goals total all season, limited the Siena opportunities. Annie Bagnall delivered the best chances – and the Saints only two shots on target in the 41st and 57th minutes, respectively – but was turned away by sprawling saves from Jordan Spencer who registered her eighth clean sheet.

Canisius held a 13-7 shot advantage in a defensive battle, but couldn't crack Burns who recorded her fourth shutout. Skylar Cornell accounted for a match-high six shots for the Golden Griffins, three of which were on target.

The scoreless stalemate was the first for Siena in two years, which coincidentally happened to be the last time that the programs met in Loudonville. The Saints have now played Canisius to three straight draws after having won the previous five in the series.

Siena will look to build off the positive result this weekend when they return to action at new MAAC member Sacred Heart Saturday at noon in Connecticut.
