LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Volleyball was befallen by a cluster of errors and was outlasted down the stretch as the Saints dropped their match against Niagara 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 9-25, 27-29) on Saturday at the UHY Center.
Siena (6-23, 5-12 MAAC) had a rollercoaster of a match, bouncing back to take the second set with a .324 hitting percentage after opening with a .154 mark.
The Saints were unable to sustain a rally in the third set, falling behind 11-3 and never clawing their way back into the set.
Siena responded in the fourth set, pushing the set into extra points needed with a surge from
Doga Diraz,
Sara Wagner and
Salme Adeele Hollas on the attack. With the score locked at 27 apiece, the Purple Eagles' Laryssa Imbuzeiro and Kinga Wronska came up with kills with close it on feeds from Paisley Ka-ahaunui.
Niagara (14-14, 10-7 MAAC) finds itself currently in the No. 6 position for the MAAC Volleyball Tournament. Wronska led the Purple Eagles with 14 kills and 15 digs while Liana Tolliver and Payton Lee each added nine kills.
Siena's most consistent play came in the second set when it strung together a 6-0 on kills by
Olga Sawinska,
Claire Isaksen and Hollas with
Hannah Bowman serving the ball.
Oliwia Majtyka picked up back-to-back aces and Diraz came up with a kill to push the Siena lead to 15-6. Niagara got within 23-21 on a kill by Imbuzeiro, but Siena fired back with kills from Diraz and Wagner to seal it.
The Saints wrap up its season on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Canisius (14-13, 10-6 MAAC).
Siena will pay tribute to its five seniors including Wagner, Isaksen, Sawinska,
Grace Wilhelm, and
Sina Toroslu at 1:45 p.m. with an after the match special video presentation.
