LOUDONVILLE, NY – Dren Dobruna broke a single-season program record on Saturday that stood for 14 years, registering the 10th assist of his freshman campaign, while teammate
Bennet Glinder surpassed the 100 career save mark in Siena Men's Soccer's 2-2 draw with the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers from Hickey Field.
Dobruna's record-setting assist came in the 30th minute, and served as the equalizer at the time. Glinder's 100th career stop came two minutes into the match on the first shot on goal of the day for either side.
With the draw, the Saints picked up their 12th point in MAAC play, good enough to hold third place in the league standings. Through Saturday's action, there are three points that separate Siena and both Fairfield and Quinnipiac, who are tied for eighth at nine points each.
Mario Navarro Perez ('30) and
Joseph DiPreta ('77) scored the two Siena goals. For DiPreta, it was the first of his Saints career, and came on the day in which the senior was one of nine honored prior to the match. Dobruna's 10th assist came on Navarro Perez's tally, while
Zach Gardner earned a point on senior day with an assist on DiPreta's.
Glinder made three saves total in the match, while counterpart Julian Marcos had five. Dominik Topolsky scored on a penalty kick 14 minutes into the match, while Maks Czyz netted the tying tally in the 88th.
Topolsky's penalty kick goal came at 14:00 exactly, beating the outstretched Glinder for the early 1-0 lead. As the first half progressed, Siena was awarded six corner kicks and found a way to capitalize on one.
Late in the 30th minute, Dobruna sent in the service from the corner to a well-positioned Navarro Perez, who headed it in from the near side while fading away from goal to even the score. It was his fourth goal of the season and, for Dobruna, his program record 10th assist of the season, a mark that also now ranks third nationally.
After seven shot attempts through over 30 minutes of action in the second half, the Saints came through to take the lead in the 77th minute. A close-range Gardner shot from inside the box was saved by Marcos, but DiPreta was in the right place at the right time to chip it in high for his first goal with the team.
However, with roughly three minutes to play the Mountaineers were awarded their first and only corner of the match. The visitors capitalized just seconds off the corner as Topolsky assisted Czyz for the match-tying score.
Siena will play its regular season finale at 6 p.m. on Wed., Nov. 6 at Marist.
