For the second consecutive season, Siena Men's Soccer will be hosting a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference postseason match. The Saints secured the third-seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship Tournament with a 5-2 win over the Marist Red Foxes from Poughkeepsie, NY on Wednesday evening.
Siena locked in the three-seed after the win improved the team to 15 points in the league standings, and will host sixth-seeded Manhattan at 1 p.m. on Sunday from Hickey Field in the quarterfinals.
Siena's (6-4-6, 4-1-3 MAAC) five goals mark a single-match high this season, and are the most the team has scored in a match since a 5-1 win against Canisius on Oct. 27, 2021.
Five different players scored for the Saints -
Lee Mara (3, '36),
Olafur Freysson (2, '49),
Cole Hellert (4, '51),
Dren Dobruna (1, penalty kick '67), and
Mario Navarro Perez (5, '80). Freysson also had an assist on the night, contributing on Hellert's goal.
Goalkeeper
Bennet Glinder picked up his sixth victory of the season while making six saves.
The Red Foxes (6-8-2, 3-3-2 MAAC) had goals by Caio Cavaletti ('48) and Richard Morel ('57). Goalie Jamie Lowell had two saves in the losing effort.
Siena was held without a shot until the 36th minute when Freysson put one on target. Then, less than one minute later, Mara put one top shelf out of the reach of Lowell for the 1-0 Saints lead.
Marist came back to even the score less than three minutes into the second half before Siena rattled off goals just two minutes apart. Freysson notched an unassisted tally midway through the 49th minute before assisting on Hellert's goal towards the end of the 51st to make it a 3-1 match.
However, Marist closed the gap to one score in the 57th minute, and threatened to even the match twice between the 63rd and 64th minutes.
Then in the 67th minute, Marist's Arion Ulaj was carded inside the box, sending Dobruna to the line for a penalty kick. After already setting the single-season program assist record, the freshman added a goal to his rookie season and extended Siena's lead to 4-2.
Later in the 80th minute, Navarro Perez put the finishing touches on with his team-leading fifth goal of the season to close out the regular season with a three-goal win.
