LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Women's Basketball fell in its season opener to the visiting Army West Point Black Knights, 66-56, on Wednesday evening from the UHY Center.
Siena (0-1) was led offensively by
Ahniysha Jackson's 14 points (5-18 FG, 2-9 3PT), and
KB Hadley's 10 (4-11 FG, 1-4 3PT).
Anajah Brown added eight points while
Myriam Traore totaled eight.
Everyone that played recorded at least one rebound, led by Hadley with six, and both
Eszter Turi and
Zyriah Price with five each. Turi also finished tied with Jackson for a team best three assists, and also registered a team high three steals.
Army West Point (1-1) had an efficient shooting night, going 41.2 percent from the floor (21-51), 50 percent from three (5-10), and 82.6 percent from the charity stripe (19-23). Trinity Hardy netted a game high 21 points for the Black Knights, followed by teammates Taylor Wilson with 12, and Reese Ericson with 10.
The Black Knights broke out to a 16-8 point lead after the first quarter despite a shaky 33.3 percent shooting from the field. Army West Point converted each of its four free throws, however, to lead by eight after 10 minutes.
Siena cut its deficit down to four points midway through the second quarter behind an
Aniya Hooker bucket and quick Jackson three, making it 23-19 with 3:30 to go in the first half. However, the Black Knights ended on an 11-5 run to take an eight-point lead into the break.
Despite the deficit, the Saints continued to battle throughout the second half. Army West Point had as large as a 16-point cushion in the fourth quarter with under two minutes to play before Brown, Hadley and Traroe points pulled the game within 10 before the final buzzer.
The Saints begin their season-long four-game, 24-day stretch without a home game this weekend with a West Coast trip to Washington to take on the Huskies. Tip-off from the Alaska Airlines Arena is set for 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT).
