Women’s Basketball Delivers Seasons Greetings

Saints Top Canisius, Move to 2-0 in League Play

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Winning proved to be the greatest gift of all for Siena Women's Basketball. Clutch moments by Teresa Seppala and Zyriah Price down the stretch helped the Saints fend off the visiting Canisius Golden Griffins with a 67-61 victory from the UHY Center on Saturday afternoon.

Siena improves to 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play for the first time since 2018-19 following the victory.

Seppala led the Saints (5-5, 2-0 MAAC) with 19 points (7-11 FG, 3-6 3PT), while Price finished two points shy of her career high with 15 - marking the rookie's third straight game with double-digit points. Each added five rebounds to their line.

Ahniysha Jackson dropped 12 points in the win, and tied teammate Anan Conde for a team-high four assists. Anajah Brown played complete across the board with 10 rebounds, five points, three assists, two steals, and one block.

Siena was called for 22 fouls in the game, leading to 19 Canisius (1-10, 0-2 MAAC) free throw attempts. Franka Wittenburg led the Golden Griffins with 17 points, while Cory Santoro added 14.

After Price scored the game's opening basket, the Golden Griffins responded with six quick points thanks to a pair of three's, and ultimately took an 8-6 edge into the media timeout. The teams went on to combine for 24 points over the final 4:13 of the first for a 19-19 game entering the second.

Siena forced eight turnovers over the first 10 minutes of play, leading to four points, while an additional 16 came from the paint. Jackson hit the lone Siena three-pointer of the first quarter for three of her seven points in the frame, while Seppala and Price added four each.

The Golden Griffins opened the initial 5:30 of the second quarter shooting just 25 percent (3-12) from the floor, while the Saints shot 42.9 percent on just seven shots, however. Siena responded with a strong end to the half, out-scoring Canisius 11-4 to enter the break up 35-31. Jackson notched 12 points through the opening 20 minutes, while Seppala had nine and four boards.

Much like the first quarter, points came at a premium to begin the third, with the sides combining for 10 points over the first six minutes. The Golden Griffins capitalized on nine Siena fouls throughout the quarter, going 8-11 from the charity stripe as the game entered the fourth with the Saints ahead, 45-44.

The teams traded blows early in the fourth, highlighted by a KB Hadley pull-up, and a Seppala three to erase a four-point deficit and put the Saints ahead by one with 5:30 to play. Canisius responded with a trio of timely three's to jump ahead 59-55, however, Price came back with a three, followed by a pair of free throws the next time down, to grant Siena a 60-59 lead with 1:14 to play.

Canisius went to the line and converted on one free throw to regain the lead, before Seppala knocked down a clutch three with 30 seconds to go to put Siena back up. Price went on to ice the game from the free throw line, and improve the Saints to 2-0 in MAAC play for the first time since 2018-19.

Siena remains home following the holiday break to host Cornell at 6 p.m. on Mon., Dec. 30. Tickets for the final game of the Saints' month-long homestand can be purchased here.
