Longwood scored six runs in the first and tacked on six more insurance tallies in their final time at-bat in the eighth to complete the season-opening three-game weekend sweep of Siena Baseball 14-1 in Farmville, Virginia.
Nine different players accounted for 11 hits and seven registered RBI as part of a balanced offensive effort for Longwood (3-0). On the mound, Brenton Fisher went the first three scoreless with six strikeouts to earn the win for the Lancers. Four Longwood pitchers combined to register 14 strikeouts.
Siena (0-3) scratched across its lone run in the sixth on a wild pitch.
Danny Barbero and
Gavin Thorburn both doubled and
Tyler Figueroa and
Randall Hien each added a pair of singles to account for the Saints four hits.
On the mound,
Ryan Taffe and
Ramsey Collins each registered scoreless relief outings. Nine of the 14 runs allowed by Siena pitching were unearned as a result of five errors.
The Saints continue their season-opening 22-game road trip next weekend against Appalachian State. The three-game series will be contested more than 40 miles off campus at L.P. Frans Stadium, home of reigning World Series Champion Texas Rangers High-A affiliate, the Hickory Crawdads, in Hickory, North Carolina. The series gets underway Friday at 3 p.m.
