Appalachian State hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to open the fifth inning to rally past Siena Baseball 10-6 in the series finale in Hickory, North Carolina.
Siena (0-6) had harbored a slim 3-2 lead at the midway point following a two-run first inning and a go-ahead RBI single from
Louis Percival in the third inning. Percival led the Saints with three hits.
But Siena ran into trouble in the home half of the fifth as Banks Tolley, Braxton Church, and Drew Holderbach opened the frame with consecutive home runs as Appalachian State (6-1) claimed a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish. After the Saints got a run back in the top of the sixth, the Mountaineers responded with three insurance runs in the home half of the frame to propel them to the series sweep.
Austin St. Laurent had three hits and scored twice to pace Appalachian State offensively, while Dante Chirico made it through five innings with nine strikeouts to earn the win.
In addition to Percival,
Nick Bergamotto and
Tyler Figueroa added multiple hit efforts for Siena. Freshman
Noah Brooks also contributed his first collegiate home run in his debut.
The Saints return to North Carolina next weekend to continue their season-opening 22-game road trip. Siena takes on UNC Asheville for a three-game series beginning with doubleheader action Saturday at noon.
